Stand Up! Work Smarter!
Are you at work seated behind a desk? or behind the counter in a supermarket? or in school?...Here are ways to get more active right now....
Whether you are described in any of these positions described above chances are you are sitting more than is good for you...
Studies suggest we could be spending an average of nearly 10 hours per day sitting down, and more than 11 hours seated each day increases your chances of dying prematurely by 40 percent! Whoa!!
But before I lay on the doom and gloom too heavy I've got good news! It can be easy to add more movement throughout your day.
Here are some top tips to stand up more:
1. Take your meetings on foot....
Whenever you've got to make a phone call, hop up! Go for a walk or just stand still on your desk...or counter! If you've got an in-person meeting,ask if you could make the sync-up a walking meeting. Or, rather than emailing or instant messaging, walk over to see a coworker you need to talk to.....
2. Set an alarm to stand up.....
Set an alarm to remind you to stand up for 5 minutes every hour! Yes, 5 minutes every hour....You can spend those 5 minutes brainstorming , jotting down ideas in a note pad, stretching or simply taking a few deep breaths.... If an alarm isn't enough of an incentive, start chugging water in order to force yourself to the restroom more often.......!
3. Stand up when you check emails.......
We all have a habit of pulling open our inbox, refreshing and browsing through everything new...which includes checking out the latest post on my blog! *grinning*.....Now instead of doing this on your desktop, simply do it on your phone or tab. Make it an habit to hop up and do a quick lap around the office or your house each time you have the urge to check the internet.
4. Do it yourself........
Need to send out some letters, pick up a package from the nearest shop, get lunch or even use the copier?....simply do it yourself! Send less errands and get them done .
5. Make your working space less convenient......
Why get too comfortable at work or in your shop? why do you keep everything within your reach? Make it a habit to put the shredder, copier, newspapers etc out of your reach... Take a walk at intervals to get your job done.....It's safer to flex your muscles from time to time........
