Can Green Tea help you lose weight?
This seemingly benign green tea has long been touted for its almost magical health properties namely cancer prevention and weight loss. Although starving off cancer is vitally important, but it's the latter benefits that piques the interest of most people. But what is it in Green tea that can help melt off the pounds?
This study from Korea is speculating that green tea's weight control property can be narrowed down to a component known as galleted catcechins - a type of flavonoid that helps with preventing the absorption of sugar and fat in the intestine, which theoretically aids in reducing weight gain potentials. The problem however is that, when galleted catcechins reach the bloodstream they could get absorbed into the blood and increase insulin resistance which perpetuates weight gain and Type2 diabetes..
The study looked at finding a way to utilize the power of the flavonoids in green tea without causing the harmful side effects. They did so by pairing green tea extracts with a resin called polyethylene glycol -- the resin binds with the galleted catcechins in the stomach so they cannot be absorbed into the blood stream....Interesting!!
These researchers tested their theory using a mice which had been placed on a high fat diet and compared the effects of green tea extracts alone, green tea extracts paired with the resin and common drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes...They wanted to see which,if any, helped prevent insulin, weight gain and glucose intolerance...
The verdict? green tea alone did not produce results but the green tea paired with the resins had significantly positive results. The polyethylene glycol helped keep the galleted catcechins in the intestines for a longer period of time so it had more time to work it's weight loss magic...
Turns out the green tea and resin combo was just as effective compared to the diabetes drugs.
The amount of green tea used in the study was comparable to drinking green tea on a daily basis. This could help the fight against obesity by providing an effective remedy with little or no side effects as unlike manufactured medications.
Keep the green tea coming then! .....Lol!

ReplyDeleteI guess without the polyethylene glycol, it just means that it’ll take longer for the green tea to facilitate the weight loss. Which isn’t really a bad thing, if you’re already an avid drinker of green tea in the first place.
ReplyDeleteWe shouldn't just depend on green tea for losing weight. We still have to exert effort in our exercise and preparing balanced diet. Through this, we'll enjoy more and properly utilize the galleted catcechins found in green tea. This also reminds us that we need to take resins, too. :)
